If you saw the last post you may have noticed that Kid Universal looks a little different than how I’ve drawn him in the past. Most notably he’s got a big ol’ toaster head and a tiny body. When you design a character it takes a while to figure out the finer points of a character’s personality. Even harder, how to show that through a drawing.
I think of Kid as being like a child, 8-10 years old, full of energy and ceaseless wonder. Looking over my work I managed to capture that feeling only a few times. That is until I started playing around with his shapes and proportions. I came up with a design that is similar to what’s featured in this post. It had more energy than my previous design and making him shorter allows for more visual variance when he’s next to Louis Coulon, and comedic possibilities. Think of how Laurel and Hardy played off of their physical differences in their comedy.
After settling on a design made this model sheet to help me stay consistent when drawing Kid Universal in the future.
